R. Avon

Project Type

Curating and Textile Design

Date

May 2025

Location

London, UK

This textile project seeks to bring the River Avon to the table, literally and metaphorically, by responding to the historical and ecological transformations caused by the construction of the Roman Baths.

To reflect these layered histories, I combine chainmail, a technique developed by the Celts and later adopted by the Romans with weaving methods. The chainmail embodies the tension and disruption imposed on the river, as well as the cultural clash and adaptation between Celtic and Roman influences. Surrounding the chainmail, I incorporate natural fibres woven in patterns inspired by Roman mosaic tiles, echoing the movement and flow of the river itself. This central piece is designed to function as a flower frog /floral arrangement tool, inviting local botanicals from the river’s banks to the table.
