The exhibition concept of Nowhere, Now Here originated from three roommates and a shared flat with a garden. It is here that Skylar, Quail, and I shared countless hours and conversations; it is also where this recipe project, inspired by the artists' interview and their comforting flavours, first took root.
To capture that intangible sense of belonging we seek to explore, we spent over two months capturing the interplay of shadows and light in our garden using cyanotype. This daily ritual reflects our response to the in-betweenness of our sense of belonging to the city. It serves as a means to document the passage of time and our evolving relationship with the city that we now call home.
For me, food is never just food. It's an emotion you can taste, a memory you can hold, a texture that carries belonging. Each recipe was inspired by an artist's answers to three simple questions,
1. What are your top three comfort foods?
2. Describe your last meal before you left home?
3. If you were a flavour, what would you be?
not to precisely recreate their comfort food, but to capture the feeling of it.
In this project, food not only provided comforting nourishment within our garden sanctuary but also served as a perfect icebreaker for conversation. Hearing the artists say, "It really reminds me of home!" was perhaps the greatest compliment I received. Cooking became a form of creativity, a way to share comfort and a sense of belonging with the artists themselves.
Gathering these voices in our garden reminded us all of something simple but vital: that none of us is alone, and we are all searching for a sense of stability amid a whirlwind of change.
